He said at a press conference that the new variant is currently the greatest threat to the US efforts to eliminate Covid-19.
According to research, 20.6% of the Covid-19 cases in the US are now due to the Delta variant. The rate has doubled in the last two weeks from 9.9% as seen on June 5.
On May 22, 2.7% of the cases were caused by the Delta variant according to Dr. Fauci. He further said the US seems to be following the same pattern as the UK where the variant quickly became dominant.
The variant in the UK now is responsible for 99% of the covid-19 cases.
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Dr. Rochelle Walensky warned that the variant might become dominant in the coming months. This is because, unlike the Alpha variant that is still dominant in the US, the Delta variant is more transmissible.
The new variant also seems to cause more hospitalizations. According to research, it is also more likely to break through the protection given by the one dose of the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccines.
It is however not yet clear how much protection the Moderna and Johnson and Johnson vaccines give against the variant.
President Joe Biden on Friday urged Americans to get fully vaccinated so as to get full protection from the variant. He further warned that young adults are particularly vulnerable.
