The District Registration Officer – NIRA, attached to Kole district, Asiimwe Fabby Innocent has been charged to court for alleged abuse of office. The accused in the year 2021, allegedly moved a registration kit from Kole district to Kampala. He apparently used the kit to register people in Kampala, outside his jurisdiction, contrary to NIRA procedures and guidelines.
The accused did this while deployed in Kole district as the District Registration officer, with all the necessary registration kits. He allegedly used the kit to register both Ugandan and foreign nationals, most of whom reportedly presented falsified documents. Additionally, it is said that he registered some of the persons during the night, in violation of NIRA guidelines.
According to prosecution, it is possible that the suspect pursued the abuse of office for profit. However, though, it notes that such crimes are often a means to other ends such as terrorism, money laundering, and human trafficking.
The suspect is tried by the Anti-corruption division at Kololo, for abuse of Office C/S 11(1) of the Anti-corruption Act, as amended.
