He said while meeting the Uganda Musicians Association Leadership led by the president, Cindy Sanyu. He said there is need to protect local cultures by regulating the inflow of foreign musicians into Uganda.
For so long, musicians have been complaining about foreign artistes performing in Uganda without being regulated. Foreign music has been apparently headlining the country’s airwaves.
This has left Ugandan artistes worried about the future of entertainment industry. Just this year, over 8 foreign artistes have flown in the country and performed without measures.
Mao says these are genuine issues that were raised by the artistes and he says they are going to be addressed as soon as possible.
Regarding CRBTs, Mao under whose docket the copyright law falls, committed to support the amendment of the Act to meet the goal of more money in the pockets of artistes.
Cindy also informed the minister about the politics of caller back rig tone revenue. In her opinion, it is very exploitative and has to be rectified.
“Artistes receive a mere 1.8% of caller back ring tone revenue which they say is exploitative. In addition, their works are further exploited via gadgets without remuneration,” she said.
It is not the first time artistes are crying out but probably this time indeed, something is going to be done.
