Ntungamo district has been put on high alert over the increased cases of new HIV/AIDS infections in comparison to other districts in the Mbarara cluster. The Health Educator Ntungamo District and HIV/AIDS focal person Dr. Twesigye Nestelio revealed the findings.
He made this revelation in a meeting with the press in Ntungamo District yesterday at the Trek Savannah Hotel.
Dr. Twesigye revealed that they are majorly focusing on mass testing for the disease. He said this while giving updates on the HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment interventions in the District.
He further said the testing exercise will target catabolized key populations like; Sex workers, Transgender, Intravenous drug users and Homosexuals living in hotspot areas.
Apparently, meeting with journalists is a move aimed at using media to assist in spreading information on prevention measures against HIV/AIDS.
A representative from Rwanda, Mr. Muhwezi Jerison said they hope to foster welfare for key populations on six border districts of Uganda and Rwanda. He said that they hope to achieve this by 1st June, 2023.
Also, they want to ease access to health services for key populations as well as increase access to ART Services. ART Services include PrEP and PEP.
By 2021, research also showed that Uganda’s HIV status stands at 5.4% with 1.4m people living with HIV/AIDS. Ntugamo district has a population of 550,000 people of whom 18,000 people are infected with HIV. 15000 people are enrolled on medication while the other 3000 people are not yet identified.
