The notion really damaged the party under the stewardship of singer turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
Voters from different regions refused to vote for the party despite the numerous pleas from its leaders that it was an inclusive party.
It is evident that people from the same region dominate the party. They can, however, attribute this to the founding members origin and its basis of operation.
Now the Nyendo-Mukungwe legiator, Mathias Mpuuga while appearing on the NBS morning Breeze program downplayed the allegations.
“When you hear that talk, it is the talk of deeper tribalists trying to hide behind blind nationalism and liberalism not entrenched in their thinking,” Mpuuga said.
He also added that Buganda is no longer an ethnic entity where anyone can get voted for.
“When you are voted in Buganda, you are voted by everyone because Buganda is cosmopolitan. Buganda is no ethnic entity. We are probably the only region where you can be voted by everyone.” The legislator added.
Mpuuga further said that NUP efforts have weakened the regime and soon they will topple it.
“I have an idea of how much we have dug in to try and bring the regime to where it is. If you asked me today, I don’t think it is getting any stronger. It is getting more stranded.” The new LOP added.
He also added how he was grateful for his party’s top organ for choosing and entrusting him as the new leader of opposition in Parliament.
