Theft of a motor vehicle reg no UAQ 571B sparked the operation according to Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy police spokesperson. Apparently, the car belongs to a certain journalist whose name has been withheld.
The police revealed that the theft of the car occurred on Thursday October 6th from the city centre in a parking space.
“The journalist reported the incident to Central Police Station and an investigation was instituted immediately that our officers from Flying Squad were able to extract footage from the nearby CCTV cameras,” Owoyesigyire said.
He said that they identified the thief as a one Busingye Lawrence Amooti aka Mutooro, found to be the notorious robber. He added that Mutooro has been engaging himself in several cases of car theft.
Additionally, police have arrested him multiple times and released on bail. However, Owoyesigyire said the Flying Squad pursued the suspect until Gganda where bullets were fired and one injured him.
“He later succumbed to bullet injuries at the scene,” Owoyesigyire reaffirmed.
He added that they then took the body of the deceased to City Mortuary Mulago for postmortem. Additionally, they recovered the stolen vehicle from the crime scene.
