All this started after Lukwago pointed out the illegalities portrayed in the Soroti East By-election. This had massive allegations of ballot stuffing, high level of militarism and voter bribery.
NRM’s Herbert Ariko ended up winning it. And just as Lukwago was shaming the NRM for such despicable acts, Ofwono ordered him to shut up. He further told Lukwago that he could throw him out of the studios.
“Can you please shut up, I can even throw you out of this studio right now, “ a violent Ofwono Opondo threatened Lukwago before getting up from his chair and advancing towards the lord mayor.
This forced the production team to cut off the program for close to 20 minutes. When the program resumed, Lukwago had left. Door bangs were heard in the background and the program was stopped there and then.
The Naguru-based station came out in a social media post and issued an apology to the viewers.
“A debate, unfortunately, went out of hand on #NBSFrontline this evening, leading to its premature end. Thankfully, our Production team’s quick action relatively minimized the impact on and off air. All our guests safely left the Park. Apologies for all inconvenience,” NBS TV tweeted.
Lukwago also revealed that security was deployed outside the TV station to arrest him. He described what had happened as despicable.
“Short of words to explain what has happened to me at the NBS TV Frontline. Horrible, despicable!!. Fellow Ugandans, it’s Horrible. My only prayer is that I get out of this place safely!” Said Lukwago.
Former FDC president Dr Col Kizza Besigye also addressed the situation. He said that it was a pity that NBS can’t secure the safety of their visitors. He added that the TV station will be held accountable for all the torture Opondo made Lukwago go through.
Further, Besigye asked for the full clip of Opondo’s behavior to be made available. This will be used to make him pay for his crimes and for future generations to see.
