The government recently announced that it will soon release Shs54 billion to help over 1 million people in 500,000 households. This is majorly to benefit people around Kampala but also other districts and municipalities will benefit.
The opposition legislators, however, spoke to the press on Thursday. They pointed out that such interventions should first be processed through parliament for proper planning.
Hon. Joyce Bagala, the Mityana Woman MP and Shadow Minister for Information said the proposed intervention is welcome.
But she also said that it requires extensive debate in regard to the amount of money the government is releasing.
‘’This money is not enough; it should be doubled. We also need to ensure transparency of expenditure of such funds,’’ she said.
Bagala further criticized the government for lacking a clear plan for the vaccination of citizens. She also called upon the speaker to allow the opposition to debate the interventions because they also have suggestions to make.
Another MP proposed the consideration of the vulnerable in rural areas as beneficiaries of the Covid-19 relief funds.
Apparently, the criteria used to determine the beneficiaries of these funds is questionable because the lockdown has affected everyone. Therefore, they all need to benefit from any intervention.
