So far the race has confirmed one participant who is FDC’s Ssemujju Nganda the MP for Kiira Municipality. The big story is however in the ruling political party, the NRM will front only an official flag bearer.
The incumbent, Hon Rebecca Kadaga is not willing to give up her post for a new speaker. This is despite the breach of alleged party agreements a few years back.
It is said that Omoro county MP, Jacob Oulanyah who has been the deputy speaker pledged to adhere to the status quo in 2016. This is after the NRM CEC promised Oulanyah that after Kadaga’s two terms, Oulamyah would then be given the mantle.
However, the Kamuli woman MP, Kadaga seems like she is not ready to give up on the “sweetness of her chair”. She has proved that whether or no agreement, she’s ready to re-run for the role.
This has prompted Oulanyah to sound out his concern as the NRM CEC is expected to sit today and vet on the different applications for the role. It will then be decided on who to front as the party flag bearer.
Parliament is expected to elect a speaker of parliament on the 24th of May 2021. Tensions are already high in the NRM as this issue is a delicate one.
We shall keep you updated on this matter.
