Many rich nations are globally snatching the scarce supplies of the new vaccine. Poorer nations meanwhile are relying on the WHO program that has yet to go off the ground. There are a few places where the competition is playing out in closer proximity than in Israel and the territories it has occupied for a long time.
In 2021, a sharp divergence in the trajectory of the pandemic could arise which until now has ignored the national boundaries of the Middle East.
Israel could soon return to normal life and an economic revival. Meanwhile the coronavirus could still continue to malice Palestinian towns and villages just a few miles away.
Agreements signed;
A new agreement with the Pfizer pharmaceutical company to supply 8 million doses of its vaccine was dealt with the Israeli government. These doses are enough to cover nearly half of Israel’s population of 9 million people. This is because an individual is required to receive two doses.
They also reached an agreement with Moderna earlier this month to get 6 million doses. This will cover another three million Israelites.
The nation plans to begin the vaccinations next week, with a capacity of over 60,000 shots a day. The vaccination campaign will include Jewish settlers living deep inside the West Bank, who are Israeli citizens. It will however, ignore the territory’s 2.5 million Palestinians.
