The new Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah has been missing for days which gave birth to reports that he is seriously ill. Some people even claimed that a plan to fly him out for better treatment is underway.
However, parliament has dismissed such reports saying the speaker is doing quite well.
Mr. Chris Obore, the Director of Communications at Parliament said in a statement that the speaker is doing well. He attributed Oulanyah’s absence to taking time off to be with his family after tiresome schedules during the campaign trail.
‘’Following a year of intense political campaigns, keeping the Rt. Hon. Speaker away from home for months, he is making some time to be with his family. This has been enabled by the new schedule of work at Parliament,’’ Mr. Obore said.
Mr. Obore added that under the new arrangement, chairing of House sessions by the speaker and his deputy will alternate.
This is unlike the 10th parliament where the Deputy Speaker only stepped in due to the Speaker’s unavailability.
Parliament has, from the top leadership, decided to scale down physical appearances at work. This is a move by the house to observe the presidential guidelines to control the spread of Covid-19.
In recent events, the parliament had cut down the number of staff to only 20% so as to decongest the House.
The Speaker, Mr. Jacob Oulanyah has not yet released a statement concerning his health or to address the rumors about his illness.
Those who tried to reach him via his known mobile number failed to get him as it turned out to be busy all the time.
