The Spanish branch of Pfizer informed Madrid on Sunday night that the delay in delivery was due to a problem in the loading and shipment process. This happened at Pfizer’s plant in Belgium as stated in a health ministry statement.
Pfizer however, informed the health ministry in Madrid that the problem had already been solved. The also said the next shipment of the vaccine will be late by just a few hours.
The shipment of the vaccine that Spain expected to arrive on Monday will arrive there on Tuesday. This is a day later than expected.
The major cause of the delay was a technical issue with the control over the temperature of the shipments. They however had it fixed. The vaccine requires temperatures as low as -70 degrees Celsius before shipping to the distribution centers.
Once the vaccine is out of ultra-low temperature storage, the vaccine must be kept at 2 degrees to 8 degrees Celsius. This is such that it remains active for up to five days.
Spain is scheduled to receive 350,000 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine per week for the next three months.
