These dealers used their association, Uganda Scrap Dealers and Innovators Association as a platform to voice their concerns.
They said some of these people in authority hire them to drive these items to steel and tube factories and sell them. Some of them are government officials driving vehicles with government number plates according to the scrap dealers.
Apparently, the scrap dealers distanced themselves from any involvement in stealing the electricity infrastructure. They instead pinned the power agency employees who sell to them the vandalized lines and later confiscate them through raids.
This information came to light during a meeting between the scrap dealers and the Mukono Resident District Commissioner Hajati Ndisaba Fatuma Nabittaka and law enforcement officers.
The scrap dealers further appealed to Nabittaka to stop painting them as thieves because they are just businessmen. In addition, they said that the authorities know very well the real people behind the vandalism.
Nabittaka however urged the scrap dealers to improve their operations immediately. She also revealed this move would improve the societal image.
Furthermore, she warned them against having any government property in their possession. If any of them is caught, one will end up in prison.
Umeme spokesperson Peter Kawujju said anyone found disrupting power supply would not be condoned. He also called upon the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities on power lines.
