Police Arrests Three For Possessing Stolen Items Belonging To Late MP Okabe

Budaka District police have in their custody three suspects who had in their possession stolen property. The police established that the property belonged to the late MP, Patrick Okabe.

The Serere County MP, Patrick Okabe, died just over 10 days ago in an accident involving his car and a Kenyan truck. In the car, he had traveled with his wife who also died later in Mbale Regional Referral hospital.

The two were traveling to Kampala at the time of the unfortunate happening. Their burial took place on December 24th, the eve of Christmas Day at their home in Serere district.

The stolen items that were found include a Stabex fuel card and five ATM cards of various banks.

Additionally, they recovered one Parliament Identity Card, two insurance cards, business cards, and passport-size photos of Okabe.

Ms Immaculate Alaso, the Bukedi North regional police spokesperson confirmed the Thursday arrests. She also said the suspects include a deputy head teacher and two boda boda riders who will help in further investigations.

One of the boda boda riders reportedly went to Stabex fuel station to try and use the fuel card. However, when referred to the station manager, he did not know the PIN code of the fuel card.

“He (suspect) told the manager that he had been sent by his employer, a one Kutta and that the motorcycle was not his. The manager was suspicious and alerted us, leading to the arrest. The first suspect led us to his colleagues,” Ms Immaculate said.

Following that, police carried out a search at the homes and workplaces of the suspects and recovered the items. Ms Alaso said a file (GEF) 016/2022 has been opened at Budaka Central Police Station.

Investigations into the circumstances under which the suspects got Okabe’s belongings will continue from there.
