Police Chief Tim Gannon and Officer Kim Potter quit the force two days after the death of Daunte Wright started two nights of unrest. The two resigned from the Brooklyn Center force. In a statement, Officer Kim said she mistook her gun for her Taser as Daunte tried to escape. She added that she only wanted to stop him.
The incident happened in a Minneapolis suburb, in a city already on edge for the ongoing trial for an ex-cop who murdered George Floyd last year.
Clashes between police and protestors broke out on Tuesday as darkness fell in Brooklyn. This became the third consecutive night. Bottles and other projectiles were thrown by the protestors at the police headquarters. Officers responded by firing tear gas and stun grenades as well as rubber bullets.
Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliot spoke to reporters earlier and said he had appointed 19-year veteran Tony Gruenig to take over for Tim Gannon.
‘’I appreciate the officer for stepping down.’’ The mayor said adding that he hoped her leaving would ‘’bring some calm to the community’’.
