Police Shoots Woman Dead In Attempt To Rescue Suspect

On Monday morning, a middle-aged woman met her creator following an incident involving police trying to save a suspect. The incident took place in Itek sub-county in Lira district as the police tried to rescue the suspect from an angry mob.

James Ango, the suspect, reportedly broke into a house and stole money belonging to one of the residents.

In another case, residents in the area additionally accused Ango of being a habitual criminal. This includes one time he faced accusations of killing some one.

However though, some relatives of Ango allegedly made a blood compensation payment for the relatives of the deceased to drop the murder case.

But in Monday’s case, a mob cornered Ango so as to lynch him for breaking into the house. However, the LC1 chairperson of the area called upon officers from Akia police station and they immediately responded.

When the officers arrived at the scene, they began firing live bullets in the air to scare the mob away.

The area District councilor, Francis Owera said that during this scuffle, one of the stray bullets unfortunately struck one Sophie Akongo dead on the spot.

Apparently, the deceased also happened to be the sister to the complainant, Okwir, according to Bony Ongura, the LC3 chairperson.

Ongura revealed that the police officer accused of firing tried to flee from the scene. However, the mob later found the motorcycle and burnt it.

Three police officers are in custody to help with the investigation into the death of Okwir’s sister.
