Police To Investigate Viral Video Of Girl Forced Into Marriage

Maj. Tom Magambo, the Director of Criminal Investigations Department of Police, has ordered an immediate investigation into the viral video on social media. The video shows a girl being forcefully put into a car to go and get married, clearly against her will.

“I have tasked a team with investigating and basing on their findings, we shall take action within the legal framework!” Magambo said in a tweet on Wednesday.

These developments came amidst reports that the incident happened in Kyotera District. Apparently, the woman with whom the girl sat on the boda is her aunt and with the help of the men, they forced the girl into the car and drove away with her.

One Twitter user, aware of what had happened, later identified one of the men as Abel Arinaitwe Kamiheto.

“This act happened on Saturday, August 6, 2022, in Kyotera district Mukabuta-Kibaati area.  The girl is Naome, an S.2 student who is on holiday. She lost her Dad some years back and the brother to her dad took over her mom. She’s been studying at Kabaale Secondary School,” an eyewitness revealed.

Furthermore, the eyewitness revealed that the mother of the girl was in on the deal too.

“She’s being married to an old man who is over 50 years. This is the most painful part moreover in the exchange of studies. All the guys involved in the video are also known and their homes as well,” the eyewitness revealed.

In Uganda, cases of young girls forced into marriage are not a myth, with most common cases happening in some parts of western Uganda, Eastern, and Karamoja areas. However, the practice has since been termed barbaric.
