Uganda apparently has 2699km of borderlines with five different countries. However, only 67km of the border are under the control of internal affairs.
The Commissioner of Police Mr Julius Twinomujuni also doubles as national coordinator on trafficking in persons at the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He said reported cases increased from 500 in 2021 to more than double at 1200 at the end of 2022. This came as a result of increased awareness of the traffickers.
In addition, he said a report released this month showed domestic cases in the country catered for over 80% with women and children and vulnerable youth.
According to Mr. Twinomujuni, this increase is also caused mostly by poverty, unemployment, economic and gender inequality. Other causes are discrimination, domestic violence, limited access to education, and to some extent political instability among others.
He revealed this while speaking at the commemoration of the World Day Against Human Trafficking, with national celebrations held at Kabira Country Club in Bukoto.
At the same function, the deputy head of international crimes Ms. Racheal Bihore was present. She also heads the prevention of trafficking in the office of the Directorate of Pubic Prosecutions (DPP). She said the current human trafficking is being related as an act of financing terrorism.
They celebrated this year’s day under the theme, “Reach every victim of trafficking, leave no one behind,”
