Power Is More Harmful Than Alcohol-Former Secretary General of East African Community Mushega Claims

The former Secretary General of East African Community and founding National Resistance Army (NRA) member, Nuwe Amanya Mushega, has warned against amending the constitution to scrap the presidential age limits.

Mushega, a veteran of the bush war that brought President Yoweri Museveni to power 31 years ago, says the ongoing efforts to scrap the presidential age limits will only create disaster for the country.

Mushega said last week that President Museveni is drunk with power.

“From experience and observation, power is more intoxicating that alcohol. The person drunk with power is more drunk than a person drunk with crude waragi. The difference with alcohol is that whatever you do eventually you must sleep and when you wake up you have time to reflect and talk to colleagues and be advised,” he said.

Mushega added that with power, however, one is permanently drunk.

“In the washrooms, where you will be, you will want to see power surrounding you,” the veteran politician says.

He contended that the office of the president is feted, well protected, and facilitated, noting that allowing somebody to be permanently in that office for many years is so dangerous to the individual and to the state, a person is supposed to lead.

He explained that those advocating for the removal of the presidential age limits on grounds that it is bad and discriminatory are being deceptive, arguing that one cannot say a law is bad without allowing it to work and learn from it.

“When you change a law to benefit an individual, then there is a problem. For example, because alcohol is bad in all countries there is a time for opening and closing a bar except in Uganda. There is a time limit, which you can be drunk,” Mushega said.

He added: “Similarly, this thing, which makes people more drunk than alcohol needs time to say, you are allowed to be drunk from now, ten years later please get out and recover from that.”

After the five-year war, Mushega served in Museveni’s government holding several ministerial positions including Education and Public Service before leaving active politics to serve as Secretary General of the East African Community.

Parliament is currently considering a bill tabled by the Igara West Member of Parliament, Raphael Magyezi, seeking to, among others, amend Article 102(b) which bars people below 35 and above 75 years of age from contesting for presidency.
