The Catholic Church announced that it needs to raise Shs2.2b for the 2023 Martyr’s day celebrations at Namugongo Martyr’s Shrine.
This annual event is for paying tribute to the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs. They were executed for their faith on the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of Baganda between 1885 and 1887.
On Thursday, the Bishop of Jinja Diocese, Charles Martin Wamika addressed the press in Kampala on the issue. He said this year’s celebrations will be held under the theme ‘Lord Increase Our Faith’.
According to him, they chose this theme because the martyrs shed their blood due to their faith in Jesus Christ.
The Vice Chairperson of this year’s celebrations, Fr. Paul Musana said committees have been set up for assistance in various activities during the preparations.
It should be noted that last year’s celebrations registered the highest number of pilgrims. This was majorly attributed to the Covid-19 pandemic that put the country in lockdown for two years.
As a result, the country missed out on two Martyr’s day celebrations in 2020 and 2021. Consequently, when 2022 came and the country opened, a record number of pilgrims made their way to Namugongo for the celebrations.
However though, at the moment, it is still a little early as we still have two months to the real day. This means that current preparations are mainly focused on monetary issues.
