President Museveni has assured Ugandan musicians that the copyright laws will be implemented. Artistes have been crying about the copyright law saying it’s not working and they are not benefiting anything from it.
In Uganda, most musicians earn from stage performances and concerts. However, when it comes to streaming platforms, they don’t earn a lot from it just because of the copyright law that doesn’t work at all.
Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) led by Cindy Sanyu was formed to help with that but is yet to get results. Last year, Eddy Kenzo, a former member of UMA decided to start his federation.
He named it the Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) with full cabinet ready to work. His deputies Sheebah and Pallaso have been also actively helping him.
Two months ago, he met with President Museveni to talk about the copyright law. He told the media that President Museveni promised to work on that.
While addressing the nation days ago, the president said Kenzo had come to him and he is ready to work on what they talked about.
“There is this young boy Eddy Kenzo that came to me talking about the copyright law. He told me 4.1 million people are being employed in that sector. I can assure you the copyright law will be implemented,” he said.
It should be noted that for a very long time, musicians have cried that their music doesn’t help them in any way. They said the existing copyright laws are not that effective and should be reworked.
