President Museveni Rewards Olympic Medalists With Luxurious Vehicles And More

Yesterday saw President Museveni host the Olympic team that well represented Uganda at the just concluded Tokyo Olympics in Japan.

Uganda claimed the second spot among African countries only behind Kenya and 36 overall.

This was after the Pearl of Africa got 4 medals, two golden from Joshua Cheptegei in the 5000m and Peruth Chemutai in the 3000m steeplechase.

The others were silver and bronze from Cheptegei and Kiplimo in the 10000m respectively.

Mr Museveni said that the parents of these athletes will be rewarded for producing such talents.

“And for giving us such great talent, the parents of the gold medalists will be appreciated too. The government will build houses for them. I thank you.” President Museveni said.

The President also questioned why his 2013 order wasn’t effected fully.

He had ordered for all gold medalists to be paid Shs5 million, and the other medalists accordingly on a monthly basis.

He was however disappointed that this directive was not done as he ordered but partially.

“I made an order in 2013 that anybody who wins gold at a continental level, commonwealth, or Olympics be paid Shs5m per month, Shs3m & Shs1 million for silver & bronze. I am told they are being paid quarterly. I speak English very well, let their money be paid, even the arrears.” The President further added.

President Museveni turned his attention to the medalists thanking them for making Uganda proud.

He said that these had brought so much pride, happiness and success to the country due to their exploits.

Mr Museveni said that sports publicise the country and he was glad that they “twinned” sports with tourism.

The trio were then rewarded brand new cars for them to cruise.

However a section of the public has been discontent with the President always meeting these athletes only after they have succeeded.

These have urged government to set up facilities to enhance the athlete’s training sessions.

This would go a long way in enabling them to perform even better than they currently do.

Most have had to cross to neighboring Kenya to train from there due to the lack of proper training facilities in the country.
