President Museveni Sworn in As President For 6th Term

President Museveni has been sworn in as president of the republic of Uganda for his sixth consecutive term. This follows his victory in the January 14 polls that saw him battle with NUP stronghold Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu aka Bobi Wine.

Yoweri Tibuhabura Museveni, 76, won 58 percent of the votes cast in January’s polls, beating his closest rival and pop star, Robert Kyagulanyi. Since the election, Kyagulanyi had often disputed the results saying the election was not free and fair.

President Museveni arrived at the scene in an all black Mercedes-Benz at around 10:57 am escorted by his First Lady, Janet Museveni. He was then received by the Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi and the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda.

He started off by receiving a presidential salute before he inspected the army parade as a closing function to the previous term, hence usher it in the new one.

The Electoral Commission chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, then presented Museveni to the Chief Justice, Alfonse Owiny Dollo as the duly elected president of Uganda for the next five years.

Museveni was later sworn in by the Chief Justice as he took the oath of allegiance.

“I … do swear … that I will always truly and diligently serve the people of the Republic of Uganda,” Museveni said with his hand on a Bible.

After that, Museveni received the instruments of power including the Constitution, the national flag, the president standard flag, the Court of Arms, National Anthem and the public seal from the Chief Justice.

He also received the instruments of National defense including the shield and the sword from the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen David Muhoozi.

The swearing in was sealed off with a 21-gun salute.

A total of 12 heads of state and other dignitaries witnessed the inauguration at the Kololo Independence grounds as thousands followed proceedings from their homes for fear of spreading Coronavirus.
