President Museveni To Launch Uganda’s Second Factory For Armored Vehicles

On Wednesday, 27 July, 2022, President Museveni will launch Uganda’s second factory for armored vehicles in Nakasongola.

The United Arab Emirates firm, Streit Group, partnered with the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC), the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) to construct the factory.

The company, NEC-Streit Uganda LTD will provide a variety of security solutions according to army officials. Some of these solutions include technology sharing between UAE and Uganda.

“In addition to developing Uganda’s defence sector, NEC-Streit Uganda will, according to NEC, support the defence, healthcare, and industrial sectors as well as the railway industry,” a statement issued by Streit Group noted.

The UPDF has previously asked Ugandans to order for armored vehicles from the factory in Nakasongola. A statement from the army revealed that cars were available for both the army as well as civilians.

An agreement is also available where civilians can take their cars to the factory for armor systems to be installed in a customized manner.

It isn’t clear yet, how much an armored car will cost in Uganda. However, on the global market, armoring packages range from $30,000 (about sh113m) to $90, 000 (about sh330m), depending on the level of customization.

In 2018, the first armored vehicle factory begun its operations in Maga Maga, Jinja. This is now the second one set to be launched this week.

To make it more interesting, this bus is solar powered.

This bus is fully electric with installed batteries underneath and a solar panel on the roof which will generate power, it is reported that it will be able to run 80 to 100 km without recharge.
