The 68year old man was heading for his 6th term in office as president of Chad. The provisional results from the electoral commission were already putting him in the lead. He had 79.32% ahead of his opponents. Albert Pahimi Padacke, the former prime minister came in second with 10.32%. However, these results still have to pass through approval from the court just to make sure there were legal deficiencies.
President Idriss Déby Itno had also promised to restore peace and security in areas most affected by the jihadist attacks. On Monday, there were reports that the army had killed over 300 rebels.
Therefore, if these elections were free and fair, it only means the president was dearly loved and will be missed by 79.32% of the country’s population. However he has died on duty like a hero, one may say. This is because he was commander in chief of this army group where he has unfortunately interfaced with death
