Apparently, the world has evolved so much and a lot needs to be adjusted. The lawmakers argue that retaining an A-Level certificate or similar qualification currently as the minimum standard for prospective legislators and president is outmoded.
The public has given different opinions regarding this but most of them have surely seconded the idea.
“Same Parliament passed a ruling of having all teachers including nursery teacher to have a degree. Why not them? They should instead have a Master’s degree. The caliber of some of them is very low, that’s why they are easily bribed and pass pro-state bills instead of pro-persons,” a one Mozey said.
“It’s a debate we have been waiting for long, Uganda deserves better. How can a S6 student be paid that much money? Yet s/he has nothing to contribute in the house at all,” a one Oloya Ivan said.
However, some members of the public say a degree is not enough to improve the quality of parliamentarians.
“I think what matters is patriotism in the person. The mistake u can commit is to think that being educated & being patriotic is the same! Some people who fought for independence were not educated to even A level. We’ve seen professors reason like nursery dropouts,” a one Jumba Mukasa said.
This debate has not just surfaced, it’s been there for long but not much has been done about it.
Organ removal
Meanwhile In other news, officials from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) together with their Uganda Law Society (ULS) counterparts yesterday had a disagreement with the members of the health committee of Parliament.
They disagreed over the need for free consent and also free revocation when it comes to organ removal. The committee members wanted the time frame for revocation to be longer.
