Apparently, the government has failed to sensitize them on how the proposed new digital number plates will work before rollout.
In July 2021, the government agreed to a deal with a Russian company to provide Uganda with numberplates that can be digitally tracked. This new system involves embedding tracking chips in all automobiles in the country, at the owner’s risk.
According to the agreement, the number plates will be installed during vehicle and motorcycle registration.
This exercise will apparently involve the re-registration of all vehicles, and motorcycles which will start the Intelligent Transport Management System.
However, Muhammed Kawoya, the USAFI Taxi Park spokesperson said the system’s proposed rollout is at the end of 2023. His worry is that no official from the ministry has come out to sensitize transporters who are key stakeholders.
They are also asking the government to revise the fees to be charged saying the proposed shs735,000 is very high.
However though, back in 2021, Hon. Milton Muwuma (NRM, Kigulu County South) warned against this move. He said the government might incur losses like it happened in 2010 with Muhlbauer. Muhlbauer is a company that the government hired to issue National Identity Cards, but this ended in a loss.
