Residents In Bududa Protest Over Diversion Of Water Supply

Leaders and residents in Bududa were left unhappy over an alleged diversion of water supply meant for Nabweya hill to the town council. The project is under the Bududa-Nabweya gravity flow scheme.

The aim is to provide clean water to Nabweya hill, Bushiribo, Bushiyi, Bukigayi, and Bududa Town council.

A meeting held by councilors accused the Ministry of Water and Environment and the contractor Kol-Services LTD of diverting the project. The councilors and residents also demanded that government investigates the irregularities in the said scheme.

Claims show that the shs23b project has failed to serve its intended purpose of providing clean water to the Nabweya uphill families.

The woman district councilor, Oliver Nabutuwa said the scheme initially had to serve people uphill of Nabweya. This is because these people have for years suffered since they had no access to clean water for consumption.

“The families of uphill have continued to suffer from trekking downhill to access water from unprotected water sources. The pipes with flowing water are only in lower areas leaving hundreds of families that were meant to first benefit from the project,” Nabutuwa said.

However, Isaa Angati Bukoma, the Bududa district engineer said they had contracted the project in phases and is now complete.

On the other hand though, he did not explain why many areas in Nabweya uphill remain without water.

As of November 2021, Bududa district has got 1,087 domestic water points serving a total of 181,792 people. 177,615 of those are in rural areas.

However, 108 points have not been functioning for the past five years. They have therefore considered abandoned.

The district also has 3 piped schemes and total access stands at 67% and rural access to water is at 68% and urban 45%.
