Rock Legend Eddie Van Halen Dies At 65 After Cancer Battle

Renowned lead guitarist and rock legend Eddie Van Halen has died according to a post from his son. Eddie was 65 years old and had been battling cancer for a few years until he finally gave up his fight on October 6.

“He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift,’’ Wolf Van Halen, Eddie’s son wrote in a noted Twitter post.

Eddie Van Halen met the mother of his son, Valerie Bertinelli 40 years ago and she said he changed her life. She wrote on her twitter saying the guitarist gave her the one true light in her life, their son Wolfgang.

‘’I’m so grateful Wolfie and I was able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life, my love,’’ Valerie wrote.

Eddie and his brother Alex Van Halen began performing together as teens. But they formed the core of what would later become Van Halen after meeting David Lee Roth. Over four decades, Van Halen released more than a dozen albums together.

Furthermore, Eddie’s guitar wizardry held the band together through forty turbulent years of platinum albums. They had sold-out tours, and a revolving door of lead singers. From Roth to Sammy Hagar to Gary Cherone and back to Hagar and Roth again.

His solos crackled like lightning and fueled all the band’s signature songs: Runnin’ With the Devil, Panama, Why Can’t This Be Love?, among others. Their No.1 hit, Jump topped the singles charts in 1984.

Eddie also famously lent his guitar chops to Michael Jackson for Beat It, the smash 1983 hit from the Thriller album.

As the news of the star’s death broke, his friends and fellow musicians paid tribute to the one-of-a-kind talent. Many of them wrote heartfelt messages on twitter remembering the precious time they shared with the rock legend.
