Rwanda Shuts Down Over 185 Churches Over Building Standards

The government of Rwanda has come out to issue directives to local churches in the country, of which failure to follow comes with consequences.

This has seen the government shut down over 185 churches within just two days in the district of Musanze.

There was a national crackdown on churches launched by the government on Monday 29th July 2024. Its main aim was to clean up the church and make sure all people going to church get what they deserve.

One of the things they were looking at was the general hygiene of the church, poor infrastructure, safety standards and issues related to their legal status in the country.

Unfortunately, most of the churches didn’t meet these requirements which led them to stay closed. This will be so until they sort out the issues pointed out by the government.

These days people use churches as businesses where they just call people for prayers. Those who attend these churches are then asked to part with money for different things.

Some claim money will be used to build churches but they never build standard churches. All they do is put funny structures and when the weather is not favorable, they suffer the challenges.

In Rwanda, they are not allowing church leaders to use citizens for their businesses. All they want is a church to be a church that helps people, not the one that takes away from people.

The crackdown is still going on and more churches are expected to close especially those that are not standard.
