Rwanda’s Kagame Speaks Out On Border Reopening

The President of Rwanda, Paul Kagame has spoken out about the reopening of the Gatuna border after nearly three years of closure.

Speaking at parliament on Tuesday, Kagame said that the delayed move happened due to the fact that there were pending issues.

Some of these pending issues had led to the closure of the border and therefore needed to be resolved which had taken a stall.

He reminded the officials present that Rwanda did not just wake up to close the border. Apparently, the country did so because of serious concerns. They had which they presented to their counterparts but did not react.

Among the issues the government of Rwanda has previously raised with Uganda include the torture of Rwandan citizens.

Commenting on the latest progress, however, he said an envoy from Uganda brought a message. In their conversation, they agreed that there was a solution both sides could undertake.

What apparently led to the reopening of the border was the meeting between Uganda’s Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and President Kagame.

Gen Muhoozi meets Paul Kagame

In similar story previously published by NEWSLEXPOINT.com Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s meeting with President Paul Kagame last week is apparently paying off. This is because Rwanda has recently announced that it will be reopening its border with Uganda.

A statement released by the Rwanda Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation indicated the border will be opened on Monday, 31st 2022. Apparently, after Gen Muhoozi’s visit, Rwanda took note of the issues raised and started a process to reopen this point. The Rwandan authorities closed the Katuna/Gatuna border since March 2019.
