Samia Suluhu: My Government Workers Dismissed Me At First As Just Another Woman

Her excellency, Samia Suluhu Hassan has narrated the disbelief everyone has in her leadership because she is a woman. She revealed that even her own government workers doubted her competence for this position.

“Even some of my government workers dismissed me at first as just another woman, but they soon accepted my leadership. But this is not just in Africa, even in America, [Hillary] Clinton reached a place where we thought she was going to be the president but she couldn’t,” Ms Samia said.

President Suluhu Hassan says there are people who don’t believe that women can actually be better Presidents. However, she says she is here to prove such minds wrong.

Currently, Samia Suluhu is considered the only female president in Africa.

This is because Ethiopia’s presidency is ceremonial and the president there is a woman.

Much as she replaced her former boss, Magufuli, she has made a lot of turns from his way of leadership. She started by recreating awareness of Covid in the country.

On top of this, she started the vaccination plan where she participated fully by getting the vaccine first. She however said now her worry is the availability of the vaccine.

“But my main worry now is not vaccine hesitancy but the availability of vaccines, we have received donations from the US and acquired some from Covax facilities, but they will soon run out.”

However, some people still have her under watch because she has apparently refused to free opposition leader Freeman Mbowe. They arrested him recently under circumstances that some call political.

She diverts from this point though saying indeed that was his intention, for people to say his arrest is political.

“He was out of the country for a long time. I don’t know why he fled but when he returned he started creating trouble with calls for a new constitution. I suspect that knowing the charges he was facing, he calculated that if he was arrested he could claim that it was because he was pushing for a new constitution.”
