Senior Police Officer Siraj Arrested For Robbing Shs 1.4B From Korean Investors

Siraj Bakaleke was arrested alongside other four police officers for extortion from two S.Korean citizens. The two South Koreans had come to purchase Gold from Uganda that was estimated for over Shs 1.5B.

Park Seunghoon and Jang Shingu Un are the two Koreans that had come to purchase gold. These foreigners were to meet the gold dealers at acacia mall where the meeting was going to take place.

The meeting was set up by their lawyer only identified as Wanyoto.

The officers arrested are; Siraj Bakaleke the Kampala South Regional Police Commander, Kenneth Zirintuusa, Patrick Ochen, George Kayongo and Isaac Munezero, the Officer in charge Crime Intelligence Katwe police station.

The police Professional Standards Unit spokesperson Vincent Ssekate confirmed the arrests.

The South Koreans identified as Park Seunghoon and Jang Shingu Un were to meet some gold dealers at Acacia Mall where their lawyer only identified as Wanyoto had set up the meeting.

According to a recorded statement at the flying squad headquarters, one of the foreigners narrated that as they reached acacia mall they were mulched by security operatives instead of the gold dealers that they were supposed to meet. On meeting the security officers, they were put on gunpoint and asked to hand over the money they had.

A sum of 1.4 billion Shillings was handed over to the police officers before the two South Koreans were arrested and detained at Katwe Police Station.  After detention for two days, police officers bought two air tickets with Emirates Air and planned to repatriate the two foreigners to South Korea using some of the extorted money.

I was informed that I needed to have a business with a capital of Shs4m yet my capital was very small.” The chairperson Kisoboka Saving Group in Nawandala Ms. Nakagolo Faith said they were not able to join the program. This is given the many conditions attached. She also asked their woman MP to raise their concerns to the relevant offices. The MP condemned the mode of implementation of the program. She cited that it has turned to benefit the well-off class of women other than the intended group. She further asked the government to intervene saying the current strings attached to the programme are very tight to accommodate a common woman. GROW project is a Government of Uganda initiative that arose out of the need to respond to the needs of women entrepreneurs. This is especially those who want to grow their businesses, sustain their self-employment and create more jobs.
