Several People Killed After Jihadist Attacks In Mozambique

Several people are reported killed in Mozambique after a Jihadist attack in the northern part of the country. The government communicated this news on Sunday after four days since the incident happened. The government launched the program to evacuate all the survivors to the capital Pemba. Unfortunately, seven people died in the process of evacuation from where they had sought refuge.

“Last Wednesday, a group of terrorists sneaked into… Palma and launched actions that resulted in the cowardly murder of dozens of defenceless people,” Omar Saranga, a defence ministry spokesman told a news conference.

Though the government didn’t say how many, several foreigners died in these attacks as well.
They prioritised the rescue of especially citizens that is nationals and citizens. However, the government hasn’t clearly come out to say the number of people rescued yet.

Currently, several boats are still making their way to Pemba as the government rescues more people.

“Now we await the arrival of people who are most vulnerable so that we can provide assistance,” the local head of Caritas, Manuel Nota, told AFP.

News has it that some British workers are also caught up in these Jihadist attacks. Authorities are making all efforts to rescue them. The United Kingdom condemned this act in a tweet through their Africa minister.

“The UK wholeheartedly condemns the appalling violence in Cabo Delgado. It must stop,” minister for Africa James Duddridge tweeted.

In April 7 2020, these same Jihadists killed 51 locals. These came after they refused recruitment into their ranks. Local police sources cited. The killings took place in the village of Xitaxi of Muidumbe district. They massacred the villages by either shooting them dead or beheading them.
