Nairobi Water and Sewerage Corporation has revealed the cause of sewerage pipe system blockage within Nairobi.

During the interview with NTV, a chemist at Nairobi Water and Sewerage Corporation, Mr Hans Ezekiel mentioned that most of the objects they normally collect from Dandora Estate Sewerage plant include used and unused condoms, plastics, sanitary pads and wet wipes.

Preferably, we shouldn’t be receiving garbage or refuse at the treatment plants, if the top of a condom is open, it can be filled with much water. Then as soon as it gets into the pipe system whilst containing the water, it can probably block the whole system, causing unnecessary overflow in the sewerage pipe system,’Mr Ezekiel said.

Sometimes our staff find dead bodies in the treatment plant, and immediately report to the police, who also alert the fire brigade to come and remove the dead body from the system, which is strange and  shocking,’he said.

As we talk now, the Nairobi Water & Sewerage Corporation is being accused by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), who raided their urban offices recently.

NEMA is accusing NWSC for discharging raw sewerage into Nairobi River.
