The six deaths all happened in the past week with the last being a mother along with her two children in Namakwekwe suburb. Apparently, the father of the children also battled for his life at Mbale Regional Referral Hospital.
“We heard their father groaning loudly and profusely, so we rushed into their house to find out what exactly was happening,” a neighbor of the family said.
By the time they got there, the mother and two children had died, and the father alive but barely hanging on.
“The bodies have been picked and our doctors have taken samples from each victim to help us ascertain the exact cause of death,” Rogers Taitika, Elgon police spokesperson said.
With concern for the citizens, Taitaka urged concerned stakeholders to interview and sensitize members of the public.
In a related story, another David Wamukungu from Bududa district was found dead in his house yesterday. Taitaka said that these cases are related because even David’s preliminary clues also point to food poisoning.
“In this family, only the child died and we have picked his body for postmortem,” Taitaka said.
The police consequently arrested two brothers, Peter Mafabi, 18, and Pascal Matsanga, 19, both residents of Nyende Village in Bududa.
The two faulted over alleged unceremonious burial of the victim shortly after the incident without reporting to authorities.
