Somali forces have recaptured the town of Amaara in the central region of Galmudug early on Tuesday. This came shortly after terrorist group Al-Shabaab militants attacked and took over control of the town in a dawn attack.
The attack on the town as well as a subsequent explosion by the roadside in the same vicinity left at least six people dead. Among the dead, were four Somali soldiers.
According to witnesses, the attackers began their attack with a suicide vehicle-borne explosion detonated near an army base.
Galmudug Information Minister Ahmed Shire Falagle confirmed the attack but he disputed allegations that the town fell to Al-Shabaab.
Falagle said the militants loaded a truck with sheep and goats to disguise the explosive-bearing vehicle.
Furthermore, he said the truck exploded near a military camp, killing two civilians and an additional three soldiers.
Later another soldier dies and about six others sustained serious injuries after the truck struck a landmine in the area.
More still, Falagle said an airstrike targeted the militants near Amaara, but he gave no details. The airstrike, however, did not claim the life of a single civilian.
Amaara is one of three towns recently captured by Somali forces, with the US providing occasional air support.
The help came after Al-Shabaab reportedly posed threats to Somali forces, including the Danab unit trained by the US military.
