According to the air force, pilot Chu Kuang-meng ejected from the Taiwan jet fighter F-5E after reporting an engine malfunction. The 29-year-old was rescued from the sea and he was unconscious but unfortunately could not be revived.
Taiwan’s aged and under-equipped air force is forced to meet high levels of incursions into its defense zones by Chinese fighters. The island says it has scrambled its fighters at double the rate last year in an effort to warn off Chinese jets.
Beijing sees self-ruled democratic Taiwan as its own territory and has vowed occasionally to take it back one day; by force, if deemed necessary. Analysts say China’s increased buzzing of Taiwan is a way to test the island’s defense responses. It is also a way to wear out its fighters.
The Air force chief of staff Huang Chih-wei said all F-5 fighters were grounded since the crash for safety checks. The F-5E is an older generation fighter with a design that dates back to the 1960s.
In July, two crew members were killed in a helicopter crash as Taiwan’s military held drills across the island. One of the drills was a simulation of coastal assaults from China.
Ever since the two split in 1949 after the civil war, Taiwan has lived with the threat of invasion by China.
