Tayebwa Expresses Concerns Over Cancer-Causing Pesticides

Deputy Speaker Of Parliament Tayebwa Expresses Concerns Over Cancer-Causing Pesticides

In a recent development, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Mr Thomas Tayebwa, has raised alarm regarding the use of pesticides that have the potential to cause cancer having been banned in the European countries

“ it was brought to my attention in one of the engagements which we were having with the European Union and Africa that there are pesticide which were banned in the European Union but are later allowed to be exported to third world countries like Uganda,”he said .

During the plenary session he highlighted the scientific evidence linking these pesticides to an increased risk of various types of cancer, posing a significant threat to human well-being and the environment as a whole.

However his remarks follow a concern about the safety of meat and milk in the market which the Vice President Ms Jessica Alupo had also raised towards the minister of Agriculture Frank Tumwebaze

“The VP said :” I remind you ( Tumwebaze) to accelerate your efforts on regulating and controlling acaricides. This is because of the food we eat ,the milk we drink should not be contaminated by the acaricides.”

Raising awareness among the farmers

Meanwhile in response the the minister of Agriculture  Mr Frank Tumwebaze told the House that a close attention will be paid to extension services .

Tayebwa further emphasized the importance of raising awareness among farmers, consumers, and policymakers about the potential dangers associated with these cancer-causing pesticides as he underlined the necessity for stricter regulations and guidelines to ensure responsible pesticide use within agricultural practices.

Additionally, Tayebwa underscored the need for increased investment in research and development of safer alternatives to these harmful pesticides.

Meanwhile,Tayebwa’s concerns echo the sentiments of numerous experts in the field of environmental health at s evidence linking certain pesticides to cancer continues to accumulate, it is imperative for society to prioritize the adoption of sustainable farming practices that minimize the use of these harmful chemicals.
