Tech startups and other innovation-driven businesses have been rapidly rising in Uganda recently. However, these have been urged to make proper use of locally available data centres to help them reduce costs.
Richard Zulu, a team leader at Outbox said servers located outside the country are way more expensive. He added that this will majorly be felt by private businesses that want their data kept.
He revealed that everything from distance to the size of the communication is billed. This makes the service quite expensive. Therefore, he said by using local data centres like Raxio, tech startups will see it as being less expensive.
“When you build a fintech, it has to be hosted somewhere on a server and every time a user access the services, it communicates with the server, back and forth. When the users grow, the capacity of that server has to increase but the bigger the distance from the location of fintech to the server, the more the costs,” Zulu said.
He reiterated the importance of relying on the local data centre owned by Raxio.
“When a company like Raxio comes up to support fintechs by hosting them locally, the costs are lowered,” he said.
He made these remarks during a workshop by Raxio data held at Outbox for innovators. It happened under the theme “How Raxio Data Centre can power your business.” Raxio Data Centre is Uganda’s first state-of-the-art data centre located at the Namanve Industrial and Business Park. It is owned by a US greenfield investment company called Roha.
Data centres are of good use to the world in terms of data usage and storage in addition to the country’s digital transformation.
