The Situation In Karamoja Is Deliberate – Hon Nkunyingi Muwadda

The MP for Kyadondo East, Hon. Muwadda Nkunyingi, has come out to claim that the hunger situation in the Karamoja subregion is being done deliberately by the government.

Muwadda says that it seems the government wants the people there to die.

He wondered why a government would mount roadblocks to people delivering relief to the area. It should be recalled that NUP a few days ago signed off a food consignment to the region.

This consisted of 2500kg of posho and same amount for beans. The party however claims that it met resistance from security forces as they delivered these items.

“The situation in Karamoja is deliberate. It is like the government wants these people to die because if they do not want them to die, why would they parade roadblocks for those delivering food?,” questioned Muwadda.

Further, the shadow Justice minister said that reports from several relief agencies predicted these catastrophes.

This was at the end and beginning of last year and this year respectively. The MP added that about half a million people are starving.

Further, the “deliberate insecurity” in the region has made matters worse according to Muwadda.

“I have looked at reports by USAID, WFP, and others; all of this was predicted in the early day of this year and last year. Specifically for Karamoja, we are alive to the fact that half a million people are starving. Karamoja’s situation is worse than in any part of this country. Coupled with the deliberate insecurity created by this government,” added the MP.

He went ahead to say that the area is one of the few that has an entire minister and a Deputy.

These are however all silent as this crisis looms around. Muwadda branded these as “incompetent in terms of presence on ground and knowledge of affairs on ground.”
