Traffic Officer Knocked Dead At Checkpoint By Police Driver

Lira City police has put in custody a police driver whom they arrested for knocking dead a traffic officer on duty. The accident occurred at Adwila along Lira-Soroti road on Thursday, December 15.

Two automobiles, a motorcycle number UEU 841C and a motor vehicle registration number UG 0337G were involved in the accident.

The regional police revealed that a one PC Micah Muhindo died at the scene of the accident. Apparently, Muhindo happened to be on duty at the very point where the accident occurred.

“It is alleged that the driver, of the motor vehicle identified as No 64670 PC John Oginere was a police officer attached to the Ministry of Internal Affairs. While coming from Soroti upon reaching Adwila, he knocked a rider called Bob Odongo, who lost control, and knocked Muhindo to death,” said Faridah Nampiima, the spokesperson of traffic traffic police.

She further said the boda boda rider too succumbed to his injuries sustained while being rushed to Lira regional referral hospital.

This development comes only two days after two police officers were left dead and many others injured in an accident. This happened to be a police patrol car that lost control and flipped in Gulu City.

However, the blame for this accident partly went to the police driver for his reckless driving behavior.

Faridah said the driver in yesterday’s accident has been arrested. They will  hold him to assist in investigations.

“Our sincere condolences go to the family of the deceased officer and the boda boda rider Bob Odongo,” she said

She also cautioned all road users to remain vigilant while using the roads. And asked them to drive safely especially since it is the festive season.
