‘’The people of Minnesota and the entire country have been mourning and protesting. And today, the police officer who pulled the trigger was put on notice,’’ said the late-night host at the top of the segment.
He said this referring to the veteran police officer Kim Potter who is seen in a video captured by bystanders, firing her weapon at Wright. She fired her weapon once but unfortunately, Wright died from the single bullet wound he sustained.
On Wednesday, Potter was booked on second-degree manslaughter charges.
‘’And look, I think it’s a good thing she’s being charged. But let’s be honest, that doesn’t mean much on its own. Charging a police officer is like announcing that you are withdrawing from Afghanistan. I’m not going to hold my breath for results,’’ Trevor Noah said, sarcastically.
He also said there’s no change that could be made to police procedures or police equipment to change the way police treat Black people.
Noah further cited a big problem that the Mayor of Brooklyn Center talked about earlier on; the fact that none of the police officers in that city live in the city itself. He said it is very important when one is policing a community that is not their own and has just been sent in to enforce. It makes one an ‘occupying force’.
