Apparently, from April 15, only verified accounts will have their posts recommended to others and be allowed to vote in polls. To explain this, posts from non-subscribing accounts will not be included in the “For you” reel section of recommended tweets.
The firm said last week it would be removing the verified status of a few “legacy” accounts. It said these will be those that date back to before Elon Musk purchased the social media platform.
At the moment, users are required to pay $7 (£5.70) monthly for the blue-tick verification status. This allows these users to have access to additional features of the app.
Musk revealed that these changes are the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. Otherwise, he called it a hopeless losing battle.
“Voting in polls will require verification for the same reason,” he added.
Earlier on, Mr. Musk explained that if verification is for paying, it significantly increases the cost of using bots. This, therefore, makes it easier to identify them.
Despite Musk’s “good” intentions, the move has been criticized by many social media users. The Twitter Blue initial launch in November 2022 turned out to be very chaotic.
This is because people impersonated big brands or celebrities and paid for the blue tick to look authentic. Some users even pretended to be the Twitter boss, Elon Musk himself.
This eventually forced the firm to pause the feature after less than a week, before relaunching it the following month.
