UCC takes on MTN over Internet Bundles

Telecommunications regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has tasked South African telecom company MTN to explain the inconsistencies in their data rates most which have seen bundle prices increased.

In a rather unannounced development last week, MTN Uganda scrapped off some data plans, increased prices of other bundles while some of the internet packages had their prices reduced.

Among the affected bundles were social media bundles and other higher bundles whose prices were hiked while the smaller daily bundles had their prices reduced.

This would later spark off anger on social media conversations with a bigger part of the people attacking the telecom which was accused of “stripping poor Ugandans of the little they have.”

Among other complaints raised, people complained of the rate at which data bundles get depleted since the revision, which they said was unfair before calling upon UCC to intervene.

UCC Directive

The constitution mandates UCC to “establish a tariff system to protect consumers from excessive tariff increase and avoid unfair tariff competition.”

This way, UCC is responsible for protecting consumers when operators want to charge them exorbitantly and are also responsible for curbing unfair competition by other operators.
