Uganda Braces For The Covid-19 Vaccine Rollout Today

Later today, the Republic of Uganda will begin the first phase of the Coronavirus vaccination. It will begin with the health workers at Mulago National Referral Hospital and Entebbe Regional Referral Hospital.

The Health Minister, Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng said in an interview with journalists that initial doses will go to the most vulnerable. This is because they face a higher risk of contracting the virus.

‘’The priority groups to receive the COVID-19 vaccination in a staggered manner are all health care workers, teachers, security personnel, adults aged 50 and above,’’ Aceng noted.

She also notes that those with underlying conditions but below the age of 50 years are also under the ‘vulnerable’ category.

Other essential groups include airline workers, media, prisoners, tour guides and operators, bankers, immigration officers among others. They will consider them in the first group of people to receive the vaccine.

On the other hand, Dr Ruth Aceng said they will identify the beneficiaries using national IDs, driving licenses, passports, and refugee cards. They will also use work permits to identify the beneficiaries as well as using Local Council Leaders and village Health teams.

The identification documents are essential for the purposes of records. Also, this will help in the follow-up and reminder to receive the second dose of the vaccine. A vaccination card will be issued after the information has been captured and the beneficiary will be informed of the date of the next vaccination.

Uganda has, by far, recorded 40,000 Covid-19 cases and 344 deaths since the first case about a year ago. In the last two months though, cases have significantly gone down.
