Along with Spire Ssentongo, is human rights activist Agatha Atuhairwe, controversial novelist Kakwensa Rukirabashaija, Tony Natif among others. The group has named a number of leaders in Parliament who are engaged in what they call “daylight robbery”.
It started off with allegations of corruption in volumes. From revealing the “dirty” dealings of the former leader of the opposition “Mathias Mpuuga” having received five hundred million shillings as a “Service Award”, to the broken recruitment system at parliament where recruitment is no longer based on merit but on the technical know-who.
Many commissioners and other leaders in Parliament were exposed for filling positions in the August House with relatives and family members.
The exhibition saw the National Unity Platform go to war with their Vice President Buganda Region Mathias Mpuuga.
He was named for apparently taking a bribe from the Speaker of Parliament. This is all at the expense of thousands of civil servants who are earning meager salaries. Sometimes they even go months unpaid.
It should be noted that this group has been running a number of exhibitions. These usually target corrupt government ministries, departments, and agencies.
These exhibitions have pointed out a number of corrupt government officials and opposition leaders. They have also allegedly revealed a number of activities carried out by these institutions that have resulted in the loss of taxpayers’ money in billions.
The ongoing Uganda Parliament Exhibition is one if not, the most successful exhibition so far. It has seen NUP go to war against its own members. Some NRM stalwarts have also come to say they are shocked at what has been happening in Parliament.
The workers of parliament are also leaking all kinds of incriminating evidence against their bosses. A lot of journalists covering parliament have also been revealed to be beneficiaries of the corruption in the house.
With countrymen currently struggling with the hard economic situation, one would think that MPs are doing everything possible to create favorable trade policies. However, it appears the August house has become a cash cow for hungry leaders.
In the end, the #UgandaParliamentExhibition may not serve its purpose fully, however, it will be on record as the only anti-corruption movement that poked the balls of hungry lions at parliament.
