Uganda Police Withhold Body Of Deceased International Spanish Journalist

The Uganda police has declined to surrender the body of an international Spanish journalist Sumaya Carrasco ‘Sumy who died in an accident last week. This has attracted widespread outrage from relatives and friends to the slain international journalist.

She died alongside her driver mysteriously in what police called an ‘accident’. The tragedy happened in Kiryadodongo district along Gulu-Kampala Highway on March, 7. The police towed the wreckage of the Toyota RAV4 to Kiryandongo district Central Police Station where it has stayed to date.

A week has gone by since the happening but the driver of the said truck that knocked Sumy’s car is still at large. And chances of the police apprehending him are apparently slim to none.

Mourners attending the vigil of the dead journalist have been denied access to the deceased’s remains.

“Sumy’s body, an international journalist who was killed by the dictator in a planned accident in Kiryandongo and her driver are missing. Police is saying they will hand over ashes to the family, after the cremation”. Kawempe female Lord Councillor Nusifa Nakato who attended the vigil said.

However, some people say Sumy has been a target of the NRM regime. They therefore concluded that the NRM orchestrated the accident.

At the climax of the heated 2021 general elections, Sumy whose camera largely covered the campaign trail of NUP party presidential candidate Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert was labeled a CIA agent.

They nearly deported her until her news agency stepped in and rescued her.
