In Uganda, some comedians go to perform out of the country and get a huge audience. However, some comedians have complained that their fellows are killing the comedy industry using vulgar language.
According to James Propa, almost all comedians in the world use vulgar language. But because some are white and speak English, they don’t sound like Luganda. He said these comedians who usually use vulgar language in Uganda have pushed comedy to the next level.
“Ugandan comedy is not declining but rather evolving. Some people can’t recognise it yet we know there are Ugandan comedians who go to perform outside the country and get huge audience. Vulgar language is part of the comedy industry, it makes people laugh. We all know comedy is supposed to make someone happy and that is what comedians do,” he said.
It should be noted that there are comedians like MC Mariachi who are loved so much. But they can’t perform outside Uganda because they can’t speak English. Others like Salvado, Emma Napoleone, etc have had stints outside Uganda.
A few Comedians who do their funny things in local dialects have also been accused of begging from their fans. This has happened severally at Alex Muhangi’s Comedy Store.
Fans have always complained of comedians disturbing their peace when they attend these show. Therefore, if going abroad for shows is what james Propa says is evolution, perhaps that’s the only measure for growth.
