The head of scientists advising Govt on covid-19, Dr. Misaki Wayengera gave some statistics on the study they carried out.
He said people vaccinated with AstraZeneca get more protection than those vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine.
Apparently, both AstraZeneca and Pfizer are double-shot vaccines. However, during their approval by separate bodies, the Pfizer vaccine had an efficacy of 95%, higher than AstraZeneca’s 67% in preventing Covid-19.
A study on the effectiveness of the vaccines published in the scientific journal Nature last month, showed protection of the Pfizer vaccine drops by 17%.
This is 90 days after the jab. However, protection from AstraZeneca drops by only 8%.
‘’The vaccine’s (Pfizer) effectiveness fell to 90%, 85% and 78% after 30, 60, and 90 days, respectively.
Dr Atwine dictated who will go for these American covid vaccines
The vaccine developed by Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca in Cambridge, UK, was 69 percent effective against a high viral load 14 days after the second dose, falling to 61 percent by 90 days,’’ the report reads in part.
On Friday, Dr. Diana Atwine, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Health in a statement, dictated who will go for the American covid vaccines Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccines.
The vaccination with Pfizer will happen in Kampala Mukono and Wakiso districts while vaccination with AstraZeneca will happen countrywide.
‘’All persons starting the vaccination will receive Pfizer vaccine as their first dose and will after one month receive their second dose of Pfizer.
All persons who started with AstraZeneca and are due for the second dose after two or three months will be provided AstraZeneca in the same locations,’’ she said.
She added that persons who started vaccination with Sinovac and are due for the second dose would be informed shortly on the date to turn up.
